I have to say I don't envy some of the tough decisions judges and others who work in the legal system have to make on a daily basis and then there are those decision that just boggle the mind. That was the case recently when Region 8 News reported on the case involving murderer Anthony Antwan Millbrooks. Millbrooks pled guilty to murder and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, but instead of being taken into custody immediately Judge L.T. Simes released Millbrooks on August 12th and ordered him to return on August 22nd. Guess what, Millbrooks didn't show up and at that point he was a fugitive. Thank goodness he did finally turn himself in to Jonesboro Police after St. Francis County Sheriff Bobby May said Millbrooks was seen in Jonesboro bragging about killing 2 people. Sheriff May and others in Region 8 were outraged about the judge's decision. And they should be. Sheriff May even said it was a new one on him. He had never seen anything like it in his 26 years as Sheriff. Prosecutors in the case also objected to the decision in the courtroom, but the judge did not change his mind. Let's just hope this was a once in a blue moon decision and doesn't happen again. We don't know all the details about why certain folks are locked up and not others, but a convicted murderer? Come on. Keeping those most dangerous to society will make this a SAFER Region 8.
